Memory-Sucking Soft Synths from Native Instruments

Native Instruments Mikro Prism

The Memory Hog Mikro Prism

So I get an email from Native Instruments about my “Christmas present”, a free Reaktor synth. Sounds pretty cool Hey, even if it’s a tiny thing, it’s a new toy right? I’m not going to snub my nose at some new buttons to push. I go through the rigamorole to log in and get my synth and register it, blah blah blah; then load it up into Reaktor. Guess what? IT’S A FUCKING MEMORY HOG. What the hell? I’m running a dual core G4 notebook. Why can’t they make software that doesn’t require the power of the Hadron Collider to run it? I’m sick of having to upgrade my computers to accommodate giant memory-hoggin’ apps. Abysnth sounds just fine. Why can’t they keep making things that only use minimal power? Now I can go shell out $2k for a new Mac that has the latest & greatest processor, only to have them come out with another memory-suckin’ app a few months later. Bollocks!!

Guess this goes back to my previous post about hardware vs. software. Fuck me.

Movies

Ok, I’m way behind on my movie reviews on here. But this is what I’m working on (I’m such a tease).

Tron Legacy in 3-D (echo)
The Devil
The Universe (TV series)
Virtual Girl

Acid House

I really could listen to this stuff all day long.

I Remember Being in Love with the Woman from Black Box

…but of course, there’s always Cleveland.

Bach Meets Richard Devine

I found this vid over at MatrixSynth. By coincidence I had left iTunes running and Bach’s “Passion” was playing underneath (John Eliot Gardener). The track was “Und Siehe Da, Der Vorhang Im Tempel Zerriss”. If you have this in your collection, try it out.

Thanks again, Derrick for the funny cycling post!

Korg Electribe EMX1SD

The Korg Electribe EMX1SD

OK, I will have to eat some crow with this. In an earlier post I’d complained that I would never spend any money on a hard synth; but things have changed. Now, I’m still not going to drop $3,000 bones on a Motif, but the Korg Electribe has piqued my interest to the point that I’m ready to whip out the plastic. I’ve always loved the sound of the TB 303 and acid house techno (or whatever it goes by these days). Usually I rig Reason to do my TB 303 sounds (it can be done with some tweaking), but it never sounds exactly right. From what I’ve heard on YouTube uploads, the Electribe is a dream machine for electronic music.
Normally all I use are plug ins and soft synths, and I’ve even complained that I don’t have room to fill up my studio with a bunch of gear that will one day end up on Craigslist. But, after hearing the demos, I’m ready to have some humble pie and open up a box o’ Korg for breakfast.
Once I pay for my MiniMoog from Arturia, which is on backorder at Musicaian’s Friend (I’ll post about that later), I think I’ll be making this purcahse—I’ll give a full review too (not that you can’t find a dozen other reviews online already).

Cheers!

SF Gate Hiring Editors

Apparently they need one. The first paragraph was certainly ambiguous, but then it got worse.

Deer have anglers?

Odd

I’ve always had a strange desire to eat these.

Crushed Stars at La Grange

Great show last night at La Grange in Deep Ellum.
